Yankees' Brian Cashman on Trent Grisham's Qualifying Offer: A Bargain Deal (2026)

Brian Cashman believes that the Yankees have struck gold with their qualifying offer to Trent Grisham, which at first glance back in November seemed like quite a hefty sum. At that time, the $22.025 million price tag raised eyebrows and appeared to be a significant investment for the team. However, as the offseason progressed and the free agent market began to take shape, Cashman has come to see it as a savvy move.

"Looking at it now, that $22 million feels more like a steal given how the free agency landscape has evolved over the last few months," Cashman remarked during an appearance on MLB Network Radio this past Sunday.

In the previous season, Grisham earned $5.25 million while enjoying a career year, hitting 34 home runs and boasting an impressive .811 OPS. His performance was a key factor in his role as the Yankees' regular leadoff hitter, prompting the organization to extend him a qualifying offer. Although Grisham had the option to test the waters of free agency and potentially secure a multi-year contract worth even more than the one-year offer, he chose to stay put. This decision provided the Yankees with some much-needed stability while they worked on bringing back star player Cody Bellinger, who was ultimately re-signed on a lucrative five-year deal worth $162.5 million.

Grisham’s value in the free-agent market was further underscored by the fact that aside from Bellinger and Kyle Tucker—who recently signed a four-year, $240 million contract with the Dodgers—he was among the top outfielders available. Cashman expressed confidence in Grisham's abilities, stating, "What he accomplished last season was nothing short of amazing. All the data we’ve analyzed supports our belief that the performance he delivered in 2025 can be repeated. He’s set to be a vital player both offensively and defensively for us moving forward."

The Yankees are excited to maintain their starting outfield trio of Bellinger, Grisham, and Aaron Judge, while Jasson Domínguez, who saw his playing time dwindle due to Grisham’s outstanding emergence, is currently expected to serve as the fourth outfielder.

As the Yankees navigate their financial commitments, Grisham’s annual salary contributes to their luxury tax payroll, which has reached $335.5 million, according to Cot’s Contracts. Interestingly, his $22.025 million is tied for the seventh-highest average annual value (AAV) among all position players who signed this offseason, trailing only big names like Tucker, Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, Bellinger, Pete Alonso, and Kyle Schwarber.

This situation raises an intriguing question: are the high salaries in baseball truly reflective of player value, or do they represent a bubble waiting to burst? What do you think about the Yankees' strategy? Share your thoughts in the comments!
