SpaceX Launches NASA's Pandora Exoplanet Hunter! (Watch Live) (2026)

Don't miss SpaceX's upcoming launch of NASA's Pandora exoplanet-studying satellite on January 11th! This mission will be a live broadcast, offering a unique opportunity to witness cutting-edge space exploration. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know.

The Falcon 9 rocket, carrying approximately 40 payloads, will take off from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base. The launch window opens at 8:19 a.m. EST, providing a 57-minute window for the mission to commence. This includes the 716-pound (325 kilograms) Pandora satellite, which will embark on a year-long orbital journey.

Pandora's primary goal is to study at least 20 known exoplanets using a 17-inch-wide (45 centimeters) telescope. It will observe these planets as they 'transit,' or cross the face of, their host stars from the satellite's perspective. This transit method has been instrumental in discovering the majority of the over 6,000 exoplanets we know of today.

But Pandora's mission goes beyond just exoplanet discovery. It will also characterize known exoplanets, particularly their atmospheres. By analyzing the spectrum of starlight that has passed through an atmosphere, astronomers can gather valuable insights into the composition of these atmospheres.

However, the complexity of stellar surfaces poses a challenge. Stars are not uniform, often featuring varying brightness patches like sunspots. Pandora aims to address this by monitoring the brightness of the exoplanet's host star in visible light while simultaneously collecting infrared data. This multi-wavelength approach will help separate the star's spectrum from the planet's, providing a more accurate understanding of the exoplanets.

The mission also includes a diverse group of satellites, with 10 of Kepler Communications' Aether spacecraft and two of Capella Space's advanced Acadia Earth-imaging radar satellites among the 40 payloads. SpaceX is well-versed in rideshare missions, having launched 15 flights in its Transporter series and four via the Bandwagon program.

This particular Falcon 9 rocket will make its fifth liftoff. If all goes smoothly, the booster will land back at Vandenberg approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting mission and the latest space news!
