Devin Haney, a celebrated boxer who has held multiple championship belts including the WBO welterweight title, and previously the undisputed lightweight crown and WBC super-lightweight title, is reportedly gearing up for his next bout this summer. A highly anticipated showdown with fellow undefeated fighter, Keyshawn Davis, has been on many fans' wishlists. And according to Roy Jones Jr., Haney would be wise to make this fight happen sooner rather than later.
Speaking on the 'All The Smoke Fight' platform, Jones Jr. explained his reasoning: the longer Haney waits, the more dangerous Keyshawn Davis will become. "If Keyshawn comes up or if they even do a catch weight of 143-144 pounds, it’s going to be a very interesting fight because I think Devin has more tools and more IQ right now," Jones Jr. stated. "But Keyshawn is different."
But here's where it gets controversial... Jones Jr. elaborated on Davis's unique quality: "So, you got to have that intangible about him where he can be a different guy when it’s time to be a different guy. You can never count him out." He even suggested that from Davis's corner, he might recommend another fight or two for experience before stepping into the ring with Haney. "And if I was Devin, I would try to jump on it right now before he gets those couple fights because the more experience he gets, the harder he going to become to beat.”
Keyshawn Davis has been on an impressive trajectory. Last year, he secured the WBO lightweight title. More recently, he made a successful move up to 140 pounds (after missing weight for what would have been his first lightweight defense) and delivered a stunning stoppage victory against Jamaine Ortiz in January. Immediately after that win, Davis called out Haney, appearing ready to move straight up to welterweight for the challenge. However, he has also since mentioned the possibility of facing Lamont Roach Jr.
