A Tale of Two Meets: Dominance and Records
Idaho's swim and dive team split into two groups, each taking on a unique challenge. While the divers headed to the NAU Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, Arizona, the swimmers faced off against Washington State in a thrilling two-day dual meet in Pullman.
But here's where it gets controversial... or rather, record-breaking!
Marie Mason, a sophomore sensation, stole the show on Senior Day at the UI Swim Center. She not only claimed gold but also shattered her own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking an impressive 10:08.85. This wasn't Mason's first record-breaking feat; earlier this year, she set the all-time mark in the same event, earning her the prestigious MPSF Athlete of the Week honors.
And this is the part most people miss: Mason's achievement wasn't an isolated incident. It was a team effort! Madelynn Butler and Ginger Kiefer joined her on the podium, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard IM, respectively. Kiefer also secured second place in the 100-yard backstroke, showcasing her versatility.
The Vandals' relay teams also put on a spectacular show, with Butler, Borke, Foley, and Heasman leading the charge to a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Kiefer, Crawford, Butler, and Borke kept the momentum going, securing third in the 400-yard medley relay.
Meanwhile, in Flagstaff, Maya Salvitti led the divers, finishing fourth overall on the platform with a score of 485.20. She also placed seventh in the 3M dive with a score of 529.70, showcasing her consistency.
As the Vandals prepare for their first-ever MPSF Conference Championship Meet in Pharr, Texas, the question arises: Will they secure berths to the NCAA Diving Zones E Championships and the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships?
