Inside the Seven-Hour Interview: Jimmy Page’s Test for Becoming Led Zeppelin (2026)

Becoming Led Zeppelin—How the filmmakers earned Jimmy Page’s trust after a grueling seven-hour screening—and why that moment matters

Contenders Documentary follows the founders of Led Zeppelin, a band famously private about their work, as they open up with unprecedented access. The film gains its significance precisely because Jimmy Page and Robert Plant participate, a rare occurrence that elevates the project beyond typical music-artist retrospectives.

Director Bernard MacMahon recalls the audition-like first meeting that lasted seven hours. Page used the session as a rigorous test, peppering the team with questions to prove they truly understood the saga and the music.

One standout moment involved Page recalling a Midlands-based singer’s early band, testing the team’s ability to identify historical details. When MacMahon correctly named Robert Plant’s original group as Obs-Tweedle, Page pressed further with dates and context.

Page had brought archival material to the meeting. He set out bags of diaries and other documents, spreading them across the table. Those diaries, dating back to 1963, became a turning point—an honest signal that Page trusted the crew enough to share intimate artifacts.

MacMahon attributes his success in passing the test to thorough preparation. He traces this back to his childhood reading of a mid-1970s book about Led Zeppelin—before he’d even heard the music—whose stories of perseverance against indifferent labels and hostile press inspired him to prove himself on their terms.

Previous work on American Epic, created with co-writer and producer Alison McGurty, honed the team’s knack for uncovering rare material. The project aims to illuminate subjects that haven’t been fully explored on film, especially when archives are scarce at the outset.

For Becoming Led Zeppelin, archivist Sam Rapallo tracked down a rare Australian radio interview with drummer John Bonham. It took six months to confirm the recording and secure an original transfer, but the payoff was transformative—giving Page and Plant their first listening glimpse of Bonham speaking about the band after four decades.

That discovery provided the living remainders of a fallen comrade’s perspective, offering a fresh, resonant view of the band dynamics and history.

More details will be released in the panel video coming Tuesday."
