But here's where it gets controversial... The decision by Pakistan's government to initially boycott the match created a last-minute scramble for fans. The U-turn, though exciting, left Indian supporters facing inflated airfares and soaring hotel prices. The confirmation of Pakistan's participation just six days before the game triggered a mad dash for tickets and travel arrangements.
Aditya Chheda, a finance professional from Mumbai, shared his experience, "I paid a premium, around 50% more, even though I booked a month in advance."
The impact on travel costs was significant. A typical round-trip flight from Mumbai to Colombo, usually around $275, soared to over $1,000 just days before the match. Similar surges were seen from other Indian cities, with some routes tripling in price.
And this is the part most people miss... Planning ahead, like Parth Chauhan did, could secure better deals, but for those booking closer to the match, the costs were astronomical. Chauhan, who works in cybersecurity, had to endure a four-hour virtual queue to buy his tickets, but he considers it a small price to pay.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The excitement is palpable, especially given the historical significance of this fixture," Chauhan said.
Accommodation costs were no exception, with five-star hotels in Colombo charging upwards of $400 to $1,000 per night during the match days.
For some, like Piyush Nathani, a lucky break came in the form of unusually low-priced tickets. Nathani, an IT professional, paid just $5 for a match that usually generates millions in revenue.
"Beating Pakistan is a feeling money can't buy," Nathani said, reflecting on his previous experience at the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad.
Chheda, who has traveled to watch Team India win the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, shares Nathani's sentiment. "Winning the World Cup is the ultimate goal, but beating Pakistan feels like a moral victory. It's more than just a cricket match."
