The Master of Abstraction: Zao Wou-Ki's Legacy in Hong Kong
The M+ museum in Hong Kong is set to showcase the groundbreaking work of Franco-Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki, a pioneer of lyrical abstraction. Born into a wealthy banking family in China in 1920, Zao Wou-Ki's passion for art was ignited by his grandfather's love for calligraphy. His talent blossomed at the Hangzhou Fine Arts Academy, where he was captivated by European painters. In 1948, he moved to Paris, a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution, to further his training and immerse himself in the vibrant French art scene.
Despite his Chinese heritage, Zao Wou-Ki strived to transcend cultural boundaries. He wanted to be recognized as a painter in his own right, not as a Chinese artist, and avoided the trap of 'chinoiseries'—a term that refers to the superficial incorporation of Chinese motifs into Western art. His goal was to achieve the same level of recognition as the renowned French painter Pierre Soulages.
The exhibition highlights a pivotal moment in Zao Wou-Ki's career. In 1958, he was invited to teach in Hong Kong for a semester, a significant turning point in his life and artistic trajectory. This period marked his return to Asia after leaving for Paris, allowing him to reconnect with his Chinese roots and explore new artistic horizons.
